Garbage filled drains inundate Kangan market, locals irked

Kangan, November 15: Locals, traders and customers are fuming over the failure of administration to clean the garbage filled drains here as few hours of rains literally turn Kangan market into a cesspool.

President Traders Union Kangan alleged that drains flowing through the market are not being cleaned regularly. “Garbage and slit choke the drains which cause overflow of water and effluents. We have been asking the authorities to cover the drains but to no avail.”

“Drains in the market stink badly and during rainfall the foul smell emanating from these drains becomes more intense,” he added.

Shopkeepers here said that there are no waste bins available in the market and in absence of a proper dumping site; the garbage is littered around the market.

They further said that the littered garbage also attracts dogs thereby posing threat to locals.

When contacted SDM Kangan, Mehraj -U- Din, said: “We have been advising the shopkeepers to not throw garbage in drains and streams which flow through the market. Kangan market falls under rural area and we don’t have municipal facilities.”

“Earlier, there was some blockage in the drains and we have already cleared it,” he added.

When asked about the lack of dumping site, the SDM said: “We have identified a dumping site in consultation with Civil Society Kangan and traders union Kangan. It will be made functional very soon.”
