55 students crammed in one room- welcome to Govt Primary School Bikamnar, Budgam

Bikamnar (Budgam), Nov 07: The tall claims of the state government about reforming and uplifting the education sector come to a staggering halt with numerous government run schools craving for the very basic infrastructure and other facilities. One such school, just about eight kilometers from district Budgam, in village Bikamnar, is a classic example of the pathetic state of affairs with 55 students cramped in a single room in a dilapidated private accommodation.

Ironically, the school, which was established in 1964, has never ever seen any infrastructural upgrading and continues to remain in shambles 55 years on.

Government Primary School, Bikamnar, zone Khansahib, is operating from a single rented room where 55 students are enrolled in five classes and put in one room. The room also has a make-shift partition to accommodate the office and store.

Besides the tremendous inconveniences the students have to brave in the absence of lack of classrooms, toilet blocks, drinking water facility etc. the building poses a potent threat to their lives as the building is at the verge of collapse and a slight tremor can raze it to ground.

The school has two teachers who have to take about 25 classes in a single working day and the lack of infrastructure is compelling them to conduct these classes on the roadside.

When this reporter visited the school, a teacher was busy taking class in open.

“This is our daily routine. We don’t have any alternate,” one of the teachers said.

When asked about the school, the Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) Khansahib, Mohammad Ramzan admitted that the school was functioning from a single room and assured that a building shall be provided to the school very soon adding that it would be possible if people are ready to contribute land for the same.  “We will construct a school there (Bikamanar), if we get land for free.”

Talking to Kashmir Images, CEO Budgam, Rouf Ahmad Shahmiri, who seemed to have no clue about the school, said that the matter shall be discussed with the concerned ZEO and other officials.
