SSP Budgam Tejinder Singh said that the policeman Kultar Singh (Selection Grade Constable of JKAP 13 Bn) succumbed to injuries at Army’s 92 Base Hospital here in Badami Bagh Srinagar.

Earlier, SSP had said that militants fired upon sentry post guarding the Ziyarat Sharief this afternoon.

“In the incident, the sentry suffered injuries and has been hospitalized,” SSP had said.

Official sources had said that militants, after carrying out the attack, decamped with a service rifle (SLR) of the policeman.

Soon after the incident government forces cordoned off the area and launched a hunt to nab the assailants.

Meanwhile, Director General of Police (DGP) Shesh Paul Vaid expressed grief over the killing of a police constable.

“Pained at the loss of a valued colleague  SGCt Kultar Singh JKAP 13 Bn who attained martyredom in an attack on J&K Police guard for protection of Charar-e-shareif shrine,” Vaid wrote on social networking site Twitter.

In another attack later in the day, a policemen guarding residence of Hurriyat-M leader, was killed after militant attacked him and decamped with his service rifle at Soura in outskirts of Srinagar.

Official sources said the militants attacked the police guard, Farooq Ahmad Yatoo of Chadoora Budgam, at residence of Hurriyat-M leader Fazal Haq Qureshi at Bilal Colony Soura in Srinagar.

He was shifted in critical condition to SKIMS Soura where he succumbed to injuries. Militants also decamped with the service rifle of the policeman.

Pertinently, Qureshi had survived a severe attack at his residence in December 2009.
