Srinagar, Oct 27:  The two militants killed in a gunfight with government forces in Pazalpora Sopore have been identified as foreigners and one of them includes top LeT commander who carried reward on his head, police said on Saturday.

The duo, killed on Friday were buried at Reshwari area of Waderballa in Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district last night.

SSP Sopore Javid Iqbal told GNS that the slain duo has been identified as Abu Maaz and his close associate Ali Bhai alias Zubair of Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Abu Maaz, the officer said, was involved in a number of attacks in Sopore including in the killing of Tawseef Ahmad Ganie (shopkeeper) as well as a number of SPOs.

He said that Maaz was the top commander of the outfit and was active at least three years in Sopore.

“He was instrumental in recruiting youth into militancy, “the SSP said and termed the killing as “major achievement” for the government forces.

The slain militant commander was carrying a reward on his head, the officer said.

Meanwhile, sources said that the duo has been buried at Reshiwari which is close to the forests in Waderballa area of Rajwar, Handwara by the local Auqaf committee to whom the bodies were handed over for burial during the intervening night of 26 and 27 October. (GNS)
