Srinagar, Oct 17: A police officer and two cops were injured in a grenade attack in Pattan area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday. Police later claimed to have arrested one of the militants involved in carrying out this grenade attack.

Giving details, a police spokesman said that a police party was deployed at Baba Teng Pattan after “credible” inputs about the movement of militants on Baramulla-Srinagar highway.

“During checking, while a passenger vehicle was signaled to stop, militants boarding the vehicle lobbed a hand-grenade on police party. In this incident one police officer — DySP Zaffar Mehdi and two other policemen Shabir Ahmad and Ashiq Hussain — sustained injuries and were evacuated to hospital,” said the spokesman.

“The militants while trying to flee from the scene were chased and one militant was apprehended,” spokesman added.

The spokesman identified the arrested militant as Faizan Majeed Bhat, son of Abdul Majeed Bhat, resident of Naibug Tral, who he said was recruited into militant ranks recently.

“He along with other militant Showkat Ahmad Bhat, resident of Awantipora, who managed to escape, had joined Tehreekul Mujahideen,” spokesman said, adding that a case has been registered and further investigation into the matter is going on.

Meanwhile, suspected militants also attacked an Army camp in Rafiabad area of Baramulla district Wednesday.

Reports said that suspected militants hurled a grenade at 32 RR camp in Trakpora village which exploded outside the camp.

SSP Sopore, Javed Iqbal said a blast-like sound was heard near the camp and a team has been dispatched to the area to ascertain the nature of the blast.
