Srinagar, Oct 15: Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam today directed the Power Development Department (PDD) to ensure that there is no power problem in Kashmir and winter zone of Jammu during the winters.

He said there are clear instructions from the Governor that the consumers shouldn’t be put to any inconvenience because of unscheduled power cuts during the winters.  He said the Governor is very particular about ensuring electricity supply in view of the examinations of the students beginning this month.

Referring to the ongoing strike by a section of the PDD employees, Chief Secretary said while the grievances of the employees can be discussed at the appropriate forum for rational resolution, it should not at the same time result in putting people to unnecessary trouble because of disruption of electricity supply especially during examinations.

“While the government is open to discuss the issues of the striking employees, there should be no inconvenience to the people at any cost,” he maintained.

The Chief Secretary asked the PDD authorities to monitor the power supply regularly and ensure uninterrupted supply to the people during the scheduled hours.

He said a buffer of transformers should be created across Kashmir to replace the damaged ones at the earliest.

Jalandhar-Amargarh transmission line commissioned

Srinagar, Oct 15: Power transmission infrastructure developer, Sterlite Power today announced formal commissioning of the Rs 3000 crore ambitious NRSS-29 project for providing additional power supply to Jammu and Kashmir from the Northern Grid.

The 415 KM, Northern Region System Strengthening (NRSS)-29 project will ensure reliable power access for the Valley by augmenting the state’s power transmission capacity by at least 33 percent Sterlite Power said in a statement.

“This transmission line will deliver an additional 1000 MW power to the valley,” it said.

It said the project was commissioned two months ahead of the schedule to allow benefits to be reaped during coming winter, it said.

The company said it deployed helicranes in the Pir Panjal range to overcome challenges of high altitude, snow and inaccessible terrains. Proper planning has been done to ensure the line can sustain the elements during harsh winters in the Valley, the company said.

Sterlite Power Group CEO Pratik Agarwal said that the company surmounted numerous challenges to finish the project ahead of schedule and it was among handful of global transmission developers, with projects worth Rs 268 billion across India and Brazil, solving toughest challenges of energy delivery.

Ved Mani Tiwari, CEO- Global Infrastructure, Sterlite Power, said “The evacuation of 1,000 MW shall play a vital role in addressing the power deficit in the region, especially during winter months.”
