Sopore, Oct 12: With all arrangements set for the third-phase of the Municipal polls scheduled Saturday, 21 wards of Sopore Municipal Committee will have no elections as eight BJP candidates are in the fray unopposed from eight wards while the remaining 13 wards have no contestants.

Reports said authorities have decided not to establish any polling booth in the town as all eight candidates in fray remain unopposed.

“The BJP candidates are contesting in wards 1 to 5 and in wards 17, 18 and 21 of Sopore Municipal Committee. There are no candidates contesting against them, so there will be no voting and the candidates in these eight wards will be declared elected unopposed,” Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Dr Nasir Ahmad Naqash told ‘Kashmir Images’.

Sopore town has a total of 41228 registered voters of which 20878 are male and 20248 females. Seven wards — 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16 and 19 – are reserved for women, and in these only two female candidates have filed nominations from wards 1 and 4.

“Security will remain in place across the town only to watch over the law and order in view of the strike call given by the separatist leaders, but security for polling booths will not be put in place as no polling booth has been setup in the town,” Senior Superintend of Police (SSP) Javaid Iqbal told ‘Kashmir Images’.
