LMD conducted consumers’ awareness programme in Boniyar

Baramulla: In order to nurture students and common people about their rights and duties as consumers in far-flung areas, Department of Legal Metrology (LMD) conducted awareness camp at Government Higher Secondary School Boniyar in frontier Uri of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday.

Controller LMD Jammu and Kashmir Ali Afsar Khan was the chief guest while as Principal Government Higher Secondary School Boniyar Sareer Ahmad Khan was the guest of honour.

A large number of students and consumers of the frontier area participated in the programme with great zeal besides other senior officers of the department including Joint Controller Kashmir Amar Singh, Deputy Controller Enforcement Kashmir, Tanveer Ahmad and Assistant Controller Baramulla Mudasir Rashid were present on the occasion.

While highlighting the importance of Legal Metrology, Controller LMD Jammu and Kashmir Ali Afsar Khan said: “We have to keep you aware about the precautions to take while purchasing the goods from the markets and how to see whether the Weights & Measuring instruments used by the shopkeepers are accurate one.”

He urged the consumers to register their genuine grievances with the department for speedy and proper redressal.

“We will continue the awareness programme in future. The students and other consumers were made alert to purchase only BIS marked or ISI marked goods from the market to ensure quality and to look for mandatory declarations like MRP, PKD, net weight, address of the manufacturer and consumer helpline number on all the pre-packed commodities offered and displayed by the traders for sale and importantly the address of authorities to complaint in case of any malpractices or case of cheating is observed by any consumer,” said Director LMD  Ali Afsar Khan.

Deputy Controller Enforcement Kashmir shared various cases of consumer importance with the audience.

Principal of the institution also highlighted the need for educating consumers about their rights and responsibilities. Moreover, students delivered speeches on the topic “consumer awareness and consumer protection” and three students were given General knowledge booklets as prize for their performance. Besides, printed material was distributed among the participants as part of imparting consumer education.
