Budgam: In absence of candidates and opponents in 71 wards of the district, the municipal elections for Budgam’s lone ward among 72, would be held here Monday at Government Girls Higher Secondary School in the first phase.

According to official notice, the polling for ward 5- Bazar Mohalla would start from 7 am to 2 pm.

Bazar Mohalla, where contest is between Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party candidates, has 642 eligible voters including 329 females.

In the wake of boycott call by resistance leadership and state’s mainstream parties, it would be interesting to see how many people would cast their ballots in Budgam.

It is pertinent to mention that most of the candidates in six municipalities of Budgam have won unopposed and many wards remained vacant.

Among Budgam municipal areas 13 wards, three wards did not find any candidate, while in nine, the sole candidates  have won unopposed.

Sources told Kashmir Images that today’s contest is going to decide which party would get the post of Chairman here. They said Congress has already won five seats and BJP has bagged four.

The elections to Charar-i-Sharief, Beerwah and Magam are scheduled on October 10, but there would be no polling as candidates either won unopposed or wards did not see any candidates. While polling to Budgam, Chadoora and Khansahib is scheduled for Monday.
