Sopore, Oct 05: An alleged Over Ground Worker (OGW) escaped from Police Station Sopore on Friday afternoon. He was arrested few days back from Sopore outskirts.

According to sources, an inmate identified as Mehraj-ud-Din Khan alias Marouf of New Colony Sopore escaped from police custody. They said Khan was lodged at Police Station Sopore.

“Khan used the backyard route of the police station to manage his escape despite CCTVs cameras being installed everywhere in the police station,” sources said.

Speaking to ‘Kashmir Images’, Senior Superintend of Police (SSP) Sopore Javaid Iqbal said, “At  11am Friday, Mehraj who was arrested by security forces in Sopore outskirts along with arms and was worker of LeT, gave slip to forces and escaped from the police station.”

Departmental inquiry has been ordered into the case and all the cops who were on duty at the time are being questioned. A case (FIR no 276/2018) under section 224 RPC has been registered at Police Station Sopore and inquiry will continue, officer added.

Soon after Khan escaped from the police station, massive searches were launched by police, Army and CRPF in the adjacent areas to track him. Police are also inspecting CCTV footages for possible leads.

This is second time when an OGW escaped from Police Station Sopore. On June 12, 2018, Majeed Ahmad Mir, resident of Harwan Soporehad also escaped from Police Station Bomai and later joined Lashkar-e-Taiba militant outfit.

Mir was later killed along with his associate on September 25 in an encounter at Tujjer in the outskirts of Sopore.
