Srinagar, October 1: A group of elderly persons from Redwani village in south Kashmir’s Kulgam today staged protest here demanding removal of army camp from the area.
Shouting slogans “we want justice and remove Redwani army camp” scores of elderly people assembled at Press Enclave here to protest alleged “harassment” of locals by the army personal stationed in the camp.
They alleged that army besides harassing locals; desecrate religious places including mosques and graveyards.
“We have been witnessing tough time ever since army camp was established in Redwani. Locals living in the village are forced to remain confined within the four walls of their houses as the army won’t allow them to venture out,” Habibullah a protester said.
He further said schools have been closed in the area for the past seven days while property worth crores was damaged by the army without any provocation.
They asked the government to either remove camp from Redwani or ensure substitute arrangements for their living.
“Our graveyards and mosques were desecrated; we are not allowed to offer funeral prayers and even are forced to offer (Salah) in our homes. More than dozen vehicles were damaged by the army,” he alleged.
The protesters appealed Governor Satyapal Malik to intervene in the matter and ensure army camp is removed at earliest.
