Srinagar, Sep 29: Police on Saturday questioned the personal security officers of PDP legislator Aijaz Mir during its probe into the loot of eight weapons from his official residence.

Last night, police said a Special Police Officer (SPO) posted with the MLA fled with at least eight weapons, including the licensed pistol of the legislator, from his official residence in Srinagar.

A police source said that all the policemen posted at the Jawahar Nagar residence of the legislator were quizzed by the police today.

“The residential quarter of the legislator was sealed by the police and fingerprints of all the PSOs were taken,” sources said.

In a statement issued last evening, a police spokesman said that personal security officer of Mir, the MLA from southern Wachi constituency in Shopian district, approached Police Station Rajbagh and stated that the weapons of seven PSOs attached with the legislator were missing from his official residence in Jawahar Nagar.

“The role of SPO Adil Bashir of Zainpora, Shopian in the commission of crime was also alleged,” the spokesman said, adding that a police party reached the legislator’s residential quarter and took cognisance of the matter.

A case (FIR no. 57/18) was lodged in Police Station Rajbagh and the investigation was taken up, the spokesman said, adding that Rs 2 lakh has been announced as reward for anyone capturing the SPO with weapons.

Meanwhile, Director General of Police, Dilbagh Singh today claimed that the police have got some leads about the connections of the SPO who fled with rifles from the legislator’s residence.

Singh said that the SPO had come in contact with the militants and that the police are working on many leads.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in Bandipora, Singh said that stringent action is being taken against those whose “irresponsibility” led to the incident.

“Those who have not done their duty with responsibility will be dealt with strictly,” he added.

On being asked whether the legislator Aijaz Ahmad Mir would be quizzed by the police, DGP said, “I cannot say anything regarding this as of now but if the need arises during investigation of the case anyone would be questioned.”

He also said that there is nothing to worry about the elections as everything was going on “smoothly and civil administration is also doing their job efficiently.”
