Top Jaish commander killed in Tral gunfight: Police

Srinagar, Sep 23: A Pakistani origin militant, one of the top commanders of the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit, was Sunday killed in an encounter with government forces in Tral area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police said.

Government forces launched a cordon and search operation in Mir Mohalla of Dar Ganie Gund village of Aribal area of Tral this morning, after receiving credible inputs about the presence of militants in the area, a police spokesperson said.

He said during the search operation, the hiding militant fired on the search party and the fire was retaliated, triggering an encounter in which the militant was killed.

Huge quantity of arms, ammunition and incriminating material was recovered from the site of the encounter, he said.

From the “incriminating material recovered”, it is learnt that the killed militant is one of the top commanders of JeM outfit identified as Adnan of Pakistani origin, the spokesperson said, adding that the operation has concluded.

A government forces’ personnel was also injured in the encounter and has been admitted to a hospital.

A civilian, identified as Manzoor Dar from Tral, sustained injuries in cross-firing, the spokesperson claimed, adding that he was evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical attention and his condition is stated to be stable now.

However, locals said that Dar and two others were injured when government forces opened fire on protesters near Gadpora village of Tral.

Reports said that the forces while leaving Aripal village after a gunfight were pelted with stones on Tral-Satura road near Gadpora.

The forces, they said, responded by firing live ammunition, resulting in injuries to three protesters.

One of the injured, identified as Manzoor Ahmad Dar, son of Asadullah Dar of Gaang village of Tral sustained bullet injury in his chin.

He was taken to Sub District Hospital Tral wherefrom he was referred to Srinagar for specialised treatment.

Two others injured in the forces’ action were treated locally, reports said.
