“On Wednesday evening, she was allegedly taken to nearby dense area by a local man who then allegedly sexually assaulted her,” they added.

Witnesses said the students from the university assembled in the campus and raised slogans against the accused and were demanding exemplary punishment to the accused.

The protesting students said, “We were shocked to hear about this gruesome act. We will stand with the victim till justice is delivered.”

Students also protested against the laxity on the part of university.  A female protester said, “We are feeling very insecure after this act. Today it happened to one girl; tomorrow it can happen with anyone else. How is the university administration allowing locals to roam in university campus?”

SSP Ganderbal Khalil Ahmad Poswal, said, “We have registered a case with regard to complaint of sexual assault. We have arrested the accused. He is resident of Shubuta Ganderbal. We are awaiting result of medical examination and further investigation is going on.”

“Students were expressing some security concerns. We have already deployed our policemen for regular patrolling in the area,” he added.
