Srinagar, September 12: Journalists from various news organizations today held protest here against the detention of Asif Sultan, a local journalist who was arrested by the police last month.

Holding placards in their hands which read “pen is mightier than sword, Journalism is not a crime”, dozens of scribes from different Urdu and English media houses this afternoon assembled at Press Enclave and staged protest against the detention of their colleague.

Demanding immediate release of Asif Sultan, the protesting scribes alleged that the FIR is vague and the allegations leveled by the police in its report are factitious in nature.

They also said that the unjustified detention of Sultan tantamount to curbing freedom of press which is uncalled for.

“We have gathered here to express our solidarity with Asif Sultan and his family and assure them that our struggle against the unjust and arbitrary arrest of our colleague will continue,” the scribes added.

They also appealed Governor to personally intervene in the matter so that the family of Asif Sultan does not suffer anymore.
