‘ISJK militant’ had many non-Muslim friends, says family

Pulwama, Sep 09: As many rounds of funeral prayers were on Sunday held for slain ISJK militant Asif Nazir Dar who was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Naseem Bagh area of Srinagar yesterday, family sources said, he had many non-Muslim friends who used to visit his home too.

Witnesses said that thousands of people from nearby and far-off villages reached Panzgam to participate in the funeral prayers of the 23-years-old Dar, who had joined militant ranks in January 2017, when he was vacationing at home from his college.

He had left from home in January 2017 to rejoin his classes at MIET (Model Institute of Engineering and Technology) Jammu, where he was pursing an engineering course in computers, said a family member.

“After a few days we tried to contact him over phone but we could not get through” he added.

Just a few days later the family learnt through social media that Dar had signed up for militant ranks.

“A picture of him with an AK-47 rifle started doing rounds on the social media,” said Dar’s brother Aqib Nazir, adding that they were shocked to see him holding a rifle.

Dar, according to his family, would study religious literature, but more or less all his close friends were non-Muslims.

“He had many non-Muslim friends at college and he was very close to them. They would even visit our home,” said Aqib Nazir.

He says that they were not aware about his group affiliations and whatever they knew about him was only through media.

Sunday morning Dar was laid to rest at a local grave yard after his father, a retired engineer with BSNL, lead the funeral prayers.

Several rounds of funeral prayers were held.
