Vital bridge collapses in Budgam, many villages disconnected

Budgam, Aug 25: Several villages were disconnected from the district when a vital Mamat bridge collapsed here on Friday morning.

The incident happened at around 6:00 am when a cement-laden truck was passing through it. However, no one was injured in the incident.

According to truck driver, he was carrying extra 9 tons of load (Total 600 bags) meant for under construction “World Foundation School” in Mamat village.

Due to bridge collapse which is barely 1 km away from Budgam township, people of Mamat, Handjan, Nagrathkha, Banday Bagh, Tilampora, Zazbug, Batbagh villages are facing problems in travelling to other places.

Villagers were up in arms against Roads and Buildings Department (R&B) which according to them never has done repairing work of the bridge since its construction in 1998.

Aggrieved villagers said that besides R&B, owners of the school and truck is responsible for the incident.

Meanwhile, officials of R&B visited the spot and promised that alternate route would be constructed very soon.

Also, police officials said that an FIR has been lodged into the incident.
