JAMMU: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Jammu and Kashmir unit will observe Tribal Pride Week from November 11 to 15, with programmes focusing on tribal identity, culture, heritage and development issues across the Union Territory.

The announcement was made by J&K BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma during a workshop organised by the party on the upcoming Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas campaign to mark the 151st birth anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda.

Sharma directed office-bearers of the Scheduled Tribe (ST) Morcha, including district in-charges, to ensure that the main programme is held on November 15, observed as Tribal Pride Day.

He said the programmes would highlight the contribution of tribal communities to the freedom struggle, their cultural traditions and issues concerning their development. He also called upon the ST Morcha to take the campaign to villages and households across the region.

Describing Birsa Munda as a symbol of tribal pride and resistance against injustice, Sharma said his struggle against colonial exploitation and social oppression continued to inspire efforts towards tribal empowerment.

Rajya Sabha MP Ghulam Ali Khatana said Birsa Munda had promoted self-respect, cultural identity and a sense of nationalism among oppressed communities. He also credited the Narendra Modi-led government with initiatives aimed at empowering tribal communities and preserving indigenous heritage.

ST Morcha president Choudhary Abdul Ghani said Birsa Munda’s life and struggle should inspire younger generations to work for the welfare of society and the nation.

The workshop was attended by BJP general secretaries Sanjita Dogra, Baldev Singh Billawaria and Gopal Mahajan, besides other party leaders.

General Secretary Gopal Mahajan conducted the proceedings, while Baldev Singh Billawaria presented the vote of thanks.
