SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Friday condemned the reported attacks by Houthi rebels on civilian and energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, including King Fahd International Airport, and expressed grief over the loss of lives and injuries.
In a statement, Abdullah said targeting civilian populations, airports and energy infrastructure was deeply concerning and could threaten regional stability, with consequences extending beyond West Asia.
He said the sanctity of the Haramain Sharifain, including Makkah Mukarramah and Madinah Munawwarah, was central to the faith of Muslims worldwide. He called for the protection of the sacred places and the people associated with them.
Abdullah also warned that escalating tensions in the Middle East could affect global peace, economic stability and energy supplies. He said a wider conflict could disrupt oil and gas supplies, push up fuel prices and affect trade, placing an additional burden on ordinary citizens and low-income groups.
Urging all parties to exercise restraint and responsibility, he called for disputes to be resolved through peaceful means and stressed that civilian lives, property and essential infrastructure must be protected.
He also urged the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions, protect civilians and prevent a wider humanitarian and economic crisis.
Earlier, Abdullah offered Friday prayers at the Dargah Hazratbal, where he joined thousands of devotees in praying for peace and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir. He also prayed for the well-being of Muslims, the Palestinian people and the safety of the Haramain Sharifain.
