Leh: Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Wednesday paid tribute to police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty during Police Commemoration Day observances at the District Police Lines in Leh.
Saxena laid a wreath at the Police Memorial, where the Ladakh Police also honoured seven personnel who were martyred while serving the region. The roll of honour was read out during the ceremony.
The martyrs remembered included Inspector Tsewang Namgial, Sub-Inspector Stanzin Norboo, Assistant Sub-Inspector Sonam Dorjay and constables Ghulam Abass, Shabir Hussain, Zulfikar Ali and Mohammad Raza.
Police Commemoration Day is observed annually on October 21 in memory of 10 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel killed in an encounter with Chinese forces at Hot Springs in Ladakh on October 21, 1959.
Addressing the gathering, Saxena paid tribute to police personnel across the country, including members of the Ladakh Police, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Central Armed Police Forces and intelligence agencies. He also acknowledged the sacrifices made by their families and assured them of the administration’s continued support for their welfare and dignity.
The Lieutenant Governor commended the Ladakh Police for maintaining law and order and protecting residents despite the region’s difficult geographical and climatic conditions, including high-altitude terrain, sub-zero temperatures, heavy snowfall and remote settlements.
He also highlighted the force’s role in responding to natural disasters, winter road blockages, high-altitude rescue operations and emergencies involving stranded residents and tourists.
Saxena said the administration was committed to modernising the Ladakh Police through improved surveillance and communication systems, advanced winter gear, better healthcare and housing facilities, and enhanced forensic capabilities.
A blood donation camp was also organised as part of the observance.
Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra, Director General of Police Ladakh Anand Jain, senior police officers and family members of the martyrs attended the ceremony.
