SRINAGAR: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday deferred announcing the schedule for the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the exercise would be notified separately in view of weather conditions.
While announcing the revision schedule for 17 states, the poll body said the exercise for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh would be announced in due course.
The SSR is an annual exercise to update electoral rolls. No revision has been carried out in Jammu and Kashmir since the 2024 Assembly elections, according to the report by news agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO).
Officials have said the revision is necessary for holding municipal elections. While the State Election Commission conducts the revision of electoral rolls for panchayat elections, it relies on the ECI’s exercise for updated rolls in municipal areas.
The five-year terms of municipalities in Jammu and Kashmir ended between October and November 2023, while the term of panchayats concluded on January 9, 2024. (KNO)
