SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has approved the enhancement of the retirement age of judicial officers from 60 to 62 years, subject to an assessment by the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
According to an order issued by the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the decision follows a recommendation made by the Full Court of the High Court on August 10, 2026.
The order states that judicial officers will be eligible to continue in service beyond the age of 60 only after the High Court assesses their fitness, eligibility, suitability, performance and continued utility.
The Full Court had recommended raising the superannuation age of judicial officers in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh to 62 years, provided they are found fit for continued service.
The government order also said necessary amendments to the relevant service rules will be carried out in consultation with the High Court.
The move comes in the backdrop of earlier directions issued by the Supreme Court asking states and Union Territories to consider enhancement of the retirement age of judicial officers from 60 to 62 years in consultation with their respective High Courts.
