BANDIPORA: The District Bandipora Wushu Championship 2026 concluded on Friday at Government Higher Secondary School, Purana Tulail (PTL), Gurez, with participants and winners being felicitated at a closing ceremony.
Organised by the District Wushu Association Bandipora, the two-day championship brought together students from various schools in the area and aimed to promote Wushu among children in the remote region while providing them exposure to organised sports and district-level competition.
The concluding ceremony was attended by the Second-in-Command of 11 Kumaon, Indian Army, Gurez, as chief guest, while the Vice Principal of Government Higher Secondary School PTL was the guest of honour. Padma Shri awardee Faisal Ali Dar was also present.
Speakers at the event highlighted the importance of conducting sporting competitions in remote areas to identify talent and encourage youth participation in sports.
Dar said the championship provided an opportunity to assess the sporting potential of local children and noted that many participants displayed enthusiasm and physical ability. He said the initiative was intended to introduce youngsters to Wushu and create opportunities for talent identification at the grassroots level.
Ahead of the championship, instructors from Ali’s Sports Academy conducted training sessions to familiarise participants with the basics of the sport.
In the boys’ category, gold medals were won by Owais Qarni Khan (HSS Purana Tulail), Adil Mehraj Lone, Lateef Ahmad Lone (GMS Dangithal), Tahir Manzoor (MA Zadigay Tulail), Sheikh Asrar Illahi (GMS Sheikhpura Tulail) and Mohammad Imran Lone (HSS PTL) in their respective weight categories.
Silver medals went to Ehsan Aqif (HSS Purana Tulail), Mohammad Ismail Wani (HSS PTL), Shakeel Ahmad (GMS PTL), Moeen Ali (GMS PTL), Toufeeq Ahmad Lone (HSS PTL) and Sadam Hussain (HSS PTL), while bronze medals were secured by Mujeeb Ur Rehman (HSS Purana Tulail), Jamsheed Ahmad, Sahil Shafi (GMS Sheikhpura), Shaqib Ahmad Lone (GMS Dangithal), Mubashir Ahmad Lone (GMS Bangithal) and Shoaib Ahmad Lone (GMS Dangithal).
Among girls, gold medals were won by Zytoona Bano (GMS PTL), Rehana Bani and Tabassum Aara (GMS Mazgund Tulail). Maryam Munawar (GMS PTL), Rabia Farooq and Sumaira Majeed (GMS Mazgund Tulail) claimed silver medals, while Tabasum Mehraj (GMS PTL), Iqra Shabir and Shaziya Aamir won bronze medals in their respective categories.
The championship concluded with distribution of medals and awards to the winners and outstanding performers. Officials said the event was part of efforts to expand organised sporting opportunities in the far-flung areas of Gurez and encourage greater participation in competitive sports.
