Kulgam: Deputy Commissioner Kulgam Shahzad Alam on Tuesday inaugurated the Under-14 and Under-17 girls’ inter-district divisional-level baseball tournament at Lieutenant Nayak Shri Nazir Ahmad Wani Boys Higher Secondary School, Kulgam.
The tournament, organised by the Department of Youth Services and Sports, has brought together 16 teams from eight districts of the Kashmir division and is aimed at providing young athletes a platform to showcase their sporting talent.
Addressing the participants, Alam stressed the need to ensure that girls receive sporting opportunities equal to those available to boys and called for greater participation of girls in various sports disciplines.
He urged the Department of Youth Services and Sports to continue creating a supportive environment that promotes the overall development of young female athletes.
The Deputy Commissioner also advised the participants to balance sports with academics and encouraged them to register on the Youth Empowerment Portal to avail themselves of various opportunities and benefits available through the platform.
Alam appreciated the growing participation of students from the district in sports activities and competitions and lauded their commitment towards pursuing athletics alongside education.
