SRINAGAR: Peoples Conference chairman and Handwara MLA Sajad Gani Lone has sought clarification from the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Secretariat over the status of a resolution he submitted concerning the alleged rigging of the 1987 Assembly elections.
In a statement issued ahead of the Autumn Session of the Assembly, Lone said he had submitted two resolutions for consideration. While the Secretariat informed him that his resolution on the recent power tariff hike had been admitted, he said no communication had been received regarding the resolution related to the 1987 elections.
Lone argued that under Rule 179 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business of the Assembly, the Secretary is required to inform a member whether a resolution has been admitted, disallowed or admitted with amendments by the Speaker.
He maintained that communication regarding the status of a resolution is mandatory and said he had written to the Assembly Secretariat seeking clarification on the matter.
The issue has surfaced ahead of the Autumn Session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, scheduled to begin on September 21. The Assembly Secretariat has received nearly 50 Private Members’ resolutions for the session, of which a limited number are expected to be taken up, subject to admissibility and selection through a draw of lots.
The 1987 Assembly election remains a significant chapter in Jammu and Kashmir’s political history and has been the subject of extensive political and academic debate over the years.
The forthcoming session is expected to witness a busy legislative schedule, with hundreds of questions, several Private Members’ Bills and numerous resolutions submitted by legislators for discussion.
