LEH: Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Tuesday inaugurated the 11th Ladakh Zanskar Festival 2026, describing the event as a celebration of Zanskar’s rich cultural heritage, distinct identity and growing tourism potential.
The two-day festival, marked by vibrant cultural performances and participation from local communities, is the first major cultural event to be held since Zanskar was granted district status in April this year.
During the visit, the Lieutenant Governor inspected stalls and Doksa exhibitions showcasing local culture, handicrafts and traditional products. He also virtually inaugurated various infrastructure assets completed in the district, released Shesrab, the annual magazine of Government Degree College Zanskar, and unveiled a special postal cover on “Gonbo Rangjon” in collaboration with India Post.
Addressing the gathering, Saxena said the grant of district status was not merely an administrative change but recognition of the aspirations and unique identity of the people of Zanskar.
“Today, as we celebrate the first major cultural festival of Zanskar as a new district, it is a moment of pride for all of us,” he said while congratulating the people on the occasion.
Highlighting the region’s tourism potential, the Lieutenant Governor said Zanskar’s monasteries, mountains, rivers, trekking routes, adventure activities and rich traditions make it one of Ladakh’s most promising destinations. He noted that the festival has now been included in the Union Territory administration’s official tourism calendar.
Saxena said more than 4.05 lakh tourists visited Ladakh till August 31 this year, including over 3.71 lakh domestic and more than 33,000 foreign visitors. He said the growing tourist inflow was generating business opportunities for hotels, homestays, transport operators, restaurants, artisans and local entrepreneurs.
Emphasising sustainable development, he said tourism growth should remain environmentally responsible and respectful of Zanskar’s culture and traditions.
The Lieutenant Governor also highlighted major connectivity projects, including the Nimmu–Padum–Darcha Road and the NH-301 Kargil–Zanskar Highway, saying these would improve access to the region and create new opportunities for tourism, trade and employment.
“These projects are not merely about building roads; they have the potential to transform lives, strengthen the local economy and create opportunities for future generations,” he said.
Saxena urged the youth of Zanskar to preserve their cultural heritage while using digital platforms and modern technology to promote the region globally and explore opportunities in tourism and entrepreneurship.
Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC Kargil Dr Mohammad Jaffer Akhoon, Member of Parliament from Ladakh Mohammad Haneefa Jan and several public representatives and officials attended the inaugural function.
