SRINAGAR: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Youth Services and Sports, and Science and Technology, Satish Sharma, and Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, on Tuesday underscored the importance of providing sustained sporting platforms for youth while attending the opening day of the Greenlam Laminates BIG Premier League 2026 at Bakshi Stadium here.
The two leaders interacted with players and participating teams and appreciated the organisers for bringing together emerging cricketers from across Jammu and Kashmir through the league.
Speaking on the occasion, Satish Sharma said sporting events such as the BIG Premier League provide young people with an important platform to showcase their talent, discipline and competitive spirit.
He said the government is committed to promoting sports at the grassroots level and creating an environment where talented youngsters can pursue their sporting aspirations professionally.
“Jammu and Kashmir has immense sporting talent, and our responsibility is to provide the youth with the right facilities, opportunities and platforms to realise their potential. Events like the BIG Premier League offer young cricketers valuable exposure and a chance to compete before a wider audience,” he said.
The Minister said such tournaments not only promote competitive sports but also help instil discipline, teamwork, leadership qualities and a positive outlook among young people.
Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani said the government attaches significant importance to encouraging youth participation in sports and providing emerging talent with opportunities to compete at higher levels.
He said well-organised leagues create valuable exposure for players and contribute to the development of a strong sporting culture.
“The talent among our youngsters is immense. What is required is a sustained ecosystem of competition, coaching, exposure and encouragement. Platforms like the BIG Premier League can play a vital role in identifying and nurturing promising cricketers,” he said.
The opening ceremony was attended by DIG Traffic Kashmir Haseeb-ul-Rehman, representatives of participating teams, tournament partners and members of the organising committee.
In the opening match, Sultan Warriors Baramulla defeated Valley Fresh Cold Chain by seven wickets. After electing to field first, Sultan Warriors successfully chased down the target set by their opponents.
Lakhan Bharti starred for Sultan Warriors with a match-winning knock of 72 runs and also claimed a wicket. He was adjudged Player of the Match for his all-round performance.
The second match of the day featured United Imports Srinagar and Royal Goodwill Cricket Club, with United Imports Srinagar winning the toss and opting to field first.
Organised by 92.7 BIG FM in collaboration with the J&K Sports Council, the tournament features eight teams. The league stage will be held from September 15 to 20, followed by the quarter-finals on September 21, semi-finals on September 22 and the final on September 23.
