SRINAGAR: The Srinagar administration on Monday reviewed the progress of ongoing and proposed disaster mitigation projects, with a focus on strengthening emergency response systems and improving preparedness against floods, landslides and earthquakes.
Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Akshay Labroo, who also chairs the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), chaired a meeting to assess the status of various mitigation measures and preparedness plans across the district.
Officials reviewed proposals including the installation of Automatic Water Level Recorders (AWLRs) at identified locations, strengthening vulnerable stretches along Dachigam Nallah, Tailbal Nallah and the River Jhelum, equalisation of bunds and slopes along the Jhelum, and earthquake assessment of critical infrastructure.
The meeting also discussed mitigation measures for flash floods, landslides and earthquakes in vulnerable areas, particularly in the higher reaches of the district.
Labroo directed concerned departments to identify projects requiring immediate intervention and strengthen preparedness to deal with emergencies arising from landslides, cloudbursts and flood-like situations. He stressed the need for a coordinated response mechanism involving all departments to ensure effective disaster management.
The Deputy Commissioner also called for priority-based assessments of vulnerable locations, including Dachigam Nallah, Gandbal and Doodganga Nallah, and directed departments to implement necessary mitigation works to reduce disaster risks and improve resilience.
Preparedness plans of various departments were reviewed during the meeting, with emphasis on reducing response time, enhancing inter-departmental coordination and protecting lives and property during emergencies.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Revenue, Roads and Buildings, Public Health Engineering, Irrigation and Flood Control, Lakes Conservation and Management Authority and other departments.
