SRINAGAR: Bushra Naaz, a PhD scholar at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), has won an award at the National Bio Entrepreneurship Competition (NBEC) 2026 held in Bengaluru for her research on plant-based meat alternatives.
Naaz, who is pursuing her doctoral studies under the supervision of Dr Ajaz Ahmed Malik, Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Ganderbal, was selected after multiple rounds of screening, mentoring, pitching and evaluation in one of the country’s largest biotechnology entrepreneurship competitions.
According to organisers, the 2026 edition of NBEC attracted more than 3,200 registrations from 34 states and Union Territories. Participants were assessed on parameters including scientific merit, innovation, feasibility, business potential, team strength and presentation.
Naaz’s project on plant-based meat analogues was recognised for its scientific and commercial potential. She received a cash award of ₹1 lakh at the event.
The award was presented in the presence of Biocon Executive Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and other members of India’s biotechnology and entrepreneurship ecosystem.
SKUAST-K Vice Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai congratulated Naaz and her mentor, describing the achievement as a significant recognition for the university. He said the award reflected efforts to promote research-driven innovation and entrepreneurship among students and faculty.
Officials said the achievement highlights the growing focus on translating academic research into commercially viable solutions in the biotechnology sector.
