KULGAM: District Hospital Kulgam recorded more than 2.60 lakh outpatient visits and 8,294 inpatient admissions during the current financial year, while the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Unit and High Dependency Unit (HDU) are expected to become operational within the next 15 days, officials informed a meeting of the Rogi Kalyan Samiti (RKS) on Tuesday.
The meeting was chaired by MLA Kulgam M.Y. Tarigami and attended by Deputy Commissioner Kulgam Shahzad Alam, Chief Medical Officer Dr Showkat Ahmad Parray, Medical Superintendent District Hospital Kulgam Dr Syed Masood and other officials.
During the meeting, Dr Masood presented a detailed review of the hospital’s performance and healthcare services during 2026-27. He informed the members that six operation theatres are currently functional at the hospital, while two additional operation theatres are expected to become operational shortly, which would help reduce waiting time for surgeries.
The Medical Superintendent said the hospital had performed 851 major surgeries, 991 lower segment caesarean sections (LSCS) and 533 minor surgeries during the period under review.
The meeting was also informed that referral cases from the hospital remained comparatively low, indicating the availability of a broad range of medical and surgical services within the district.
Members reviewed issues related to hospital functioning, patient-care services, availability of medicines and medical equipment, infrastructure development and other requirements aimed at improving healthcare delivery.
The committee also discussed ongoing activities under the Rogi Kalyan Samiti and approved several projects intended to further strengthen facilities at the hospital.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Showkat Ahmad Parray briefed the meeting on the functioning of health institutions across the district and highlighted requirements requiring attention.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Tarigami stressed the need to further improve healthcare infrastructure and ensure accessible, quality and patient-friendly services. Deputy Commissioner Shahzad Alam said the increasing patient footfall reflected the expanding range of healthcare facilities available at the district hospital, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment outside the district.
