SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) on Monday paid tributes to its founder and former Jammu and Kashmir leader Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on his 44th death anniversary.
In a joint statement, senior party leaders remembered Sheikh Abdullah’s political legacy and recalled his role in the region’s political and social development.
The leaders said the large public participation witnessed during his funeral procession in September 1982 reflected the support and affection he enjoyed among the people of Jammu and Kashmir. They described him as a prominent political leader who worked against autocratic rule and advocated political empowerment and social justice.
The party leaders said Sheikh Abdullah played a significant role in political reforms and efforts aimed at expanding democratic rights in Jammu and Kashmir.
Among those who paid tributes were NC General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar, Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, Additional General Secretaries Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan and Ajay Kumar Sadhotra, Rajya Sabha member Shammi Oberoi, Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq, Members of Parliament Mian Altaf Ahmad, Hanifa Jan and Sajjad Kitchloo, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, Cabinet Ministers Sakina Itoo, Javed Ahmad Rana and Javed Dar, besides several senior party leaders and office-bearers.
The party said commemorative programmes, including Quran Khwani, floral tributes and a gathering, will be held at Sheikh Abdullah’s mausoleum at Naseem Bagh on September 8. A collective Fateh Khwani is scheduled to be held at 10 am.
