JAMMU: Two “notorious” drug peddlers were detained under the PIT-NDPS Act, while five persons were arrested after narcotic substances were recovered from their possession in different districts of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Sunday.
Uttam Kumar, a resident of Mand village, was detained under Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act on the orders of competent authority in Udhampur district on Sunday, a police spokesman said.
Kumar, a notorious drug peddler, has been subsequently lodged in district jail, Bhaderwah, he said.
The police also executed a detention warrant under PIT-NDPS Act against habitual drug peddler, Javid Hussain alias Palla, a resident of Nowshera area of Rajouri district on Saturday, the spokesman said.
He said despite being involved in multiple narcotics-related cases, Hussain continued to engage in the illicit trafficking of drugs.
After completing all legal formalities, the detenu was lodged in the district jail, Rajouri, the spokesman said.
He said the police arrested a drug peddler, identified as Suraj Badyal of Kishtwar, after 6.43 grams of heroin was recovered from his possession at Tikri in Udhampur district, while another peddler Mushtafiz-ul-Rehman was nabbed with 6.30 grams of heroin from Darhal area of Rajouri district on Saturday.
Two more drug peddlers, Amir Gulzar Ganie and Mohammad Zahid, were arrested after eight grams of heroin was recovered from a passenger vehicle in Vijaypur area of Samba district, the spokesman said, adding the vehicle and the contraband were also seized.
In Kathua district, the spokesman said police arrested an inter-state narco smuggler and recovered 279 grams of heroin from his motorcycle during checking at the Keerian area of Lakhanpur bordering Punjab.
The accused was identified as Sabir, a resident of Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh, who was coming from Punjab, he said.
