Jammu: The Government Railway Police (GRP) Jammu on Thursday said it arrested an absconding accused in the 1991 Jammu railway station bomb blast case, more than three decades after the incident.

Police identified the accused as Altaf Hussain Sheikh, son of Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Marhama in Bijbehara area of Anantnag district. According to police, he had been evading arrest since 1991 and was living under a concealed identity.

The case relates to a bomb blast at Platform No. 1 of Jammu railway station on April 2, 1991, in which three persons, including two paramilitary personnel, were killed and 18 civilians injured. An FIR (No. 07/1991) under Sections 307, 302 and 120-B RPC, Sections 3/4 of TADA and Sections 4/5 of the Explosive Substances Act was registered at GRP Police Station Jammu.

Police said one accused, Aman Ullah Khan, was arrested during the initial investigation, while three others escaped and were later declared absconders by the court.

According to GRP, an intensive manhunt launched over the past two years led investigators to Sheikh, who had allegedly established himself as a businessman in the Bijbehara area while concealing his identity.

The accused was arrested and produced before the designated TADA court on August 13 for further legal proceedings, police said.
