JAMMU: Six Wushu players from Jammu and Kashmir won 16 medals, including 10 gold, five silver and one bronze, at the Batumi Open International Wushu Tournament held in Batumi, Georgia, from July 30 to August 4.
The athletes represented India after qualifying through the national selection trials held in Dehradun in April and competed in Taolu events in the junior and sub-junior categories.
Aahan Sharma won two gold medals in Daoshu and Gunshu and a silver in Changquan. Dhruvika Gupta secured gold medals in Wing Chun and Double Dagger, while Hiranya Mahajan won gold in Changquan. Pratibha Devi claimed gold in Nandao and silver medals in Nanquan and Nangun. Rudra Pratap Singh won gold in Double Dagger, while Swarit Singh Chib bagged gold in Nangun and silver medals in Nanquan and Nandao.
In the team events, Swarit Singh Chib and Rudra Pratap Singh won gold in the men’s Duilian event, while Hiranya Mahajan and Dhruvika Gupta secured gold in the women’s Duilian competition. The J&K contingent also won bronze in the group event.
According to the Wushu Association of Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian contingent returned to New Delhi on Tuesday and the J&K athletes were welcomed at Jammu Airport by the association’s General Secretary, Bhavneet.
Wushu Association of J&K President Vijay Saraf congratulated the players and coach Sher Bhadur on the achievement and urged the Jammu and Kashmir government to establish a dedicated Wushu training hall to support the sport’s further development. He also acknowledged the support extended by the J&K Sports Council to the discipline.
