Srinagar: Police have arrested a man from Uttar Pradesh in connection with the fatal hit-and-run of an 11-year-old girl in Kulgam district and seized the vehicle allegedly involved in the incident, officials said on Thursday.

The case relates to a road accident that occurred on July 10 near KP Colony in Vessu, where an unidentified vehicle allegedly hit the girl. She was shifted to Government Medical College, Anantnag, for treatment but later succumbed to her injuries.

Police registered FIR No. 176/2026 at Police Station Qazigund under relevant provisions of law and launched an investigation.

According to police, investigators analysed CCTV footage, examined evidence and developed technical leads that helped identify the accused and trace the vehicle.

Acting on the leads, a police team from Qazigund travelled to Uttar Pradesh and, with the assistance of the local police, arrested Arun Gupta, a resident of Barabanki district. The vehicle allegedly involved in the accident was also seized.

Further investigation is underway.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kulgam said the arrest demonstrated that offenders could not evade the law by crossing state boundaries. He also urged motorists to follow traffic rules, assist accident victims and promptly inform the police or emergency services in the event of a road accident instead of fleeing the scene.
