Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Youth Services and Sports, and Science and Technology, Satish Sharma, on Sunday inaugurated the 24th Vishal Bhandara in Kathua district, visited a farmers’ market in Jammu to interact with local producers, and paid tributes to Kargil War martyr Udhayman Singh on his martyrdom day.

Regarded as one of the largest annual Bhandaras in Kathua district, the event was held amid religious fervour.

Addressing the gathering, Sharma lauded the organisers and volunteers for ensuring smooth arrangements for devotees. He said such events reflect India’s cultural and spiritual traditions while strengthening the values of compassion, communal harmony, brotherhood and seva.

He said the spirit of selfless service has always remained one of the strongest pillars of Indian society and observed that the large participation of devotees reflected the unity and social harmony of Jammu and Kashmir.

During the visit, the Minister inspected facilities at the venue, including arrangements for prashad distribution, free accommodation, drinking water, sanitation, medical assistance and other essential services. He appreciated the organisers for ensuring the comfort, safety and convenience of pilgrims.

Later, Sharma visited The Farmers Market by Maple & Ivy at the Jammu Tawi Golf Course, Sidhra, where local farmers, artisans, homegrown entrepreneurs and sustainable brands displayed fresh farm produce, handcrafted items, organic products and eco-friendly innovations.

Interacting with exhibitors, he stressed the need to strengthen local economies by creating better market opportunities for farmers, artisans and small entrepreneurs. He said such initiatives promote sustainable agriculture, traditional crafts and direct engagement between producers and consumers.

The Minister said encouraging homegrown products and sustainable practices was essential for building a self-reliant and environmentally responsible Jammu and Kashmir. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting innovation in agriculture, value addition, entrepreneurship and technology-driven solutions for farmers while preserving the region’s agricultural and artisanal heritage.

He also appealed to citizens to support local producers, saying every purchase contributes to strengthening rural livelihoods and the local economy.

Later in the day, Sharma visited Jhiri and paid floral tributes to Kargil War martyr Udhayman Singh on his martyrdom day. He was joined by the martyr’s family members, ex-servicemen, local representatives and residents.

Paying homage to the soldier, the Minister said the courage and sacrifices of the Kargil martyrs continue to inspire generations and have played a vital role in safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He urged the youth to draw inspiration from the lives of the nation’s heroes and dedicate themselves to serving the country with commitment and discipline.

Sharma also interacted with the martyr’s family and reiterated the government’s commitment to honouring the sacrifices of the armed forces and preserving the legacy of the nation’s martyrs.
