Srinagar: Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, Prof. Nilofer Khan, on Wednesday inaugurated the Employees’ Cricket Tournament organised by the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports (DPE&S) at Ground “A” of the university.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal, faculty members, officers, employees and sports enthusiasts.
The tournament has drawn participation from employees representing various teaching departments, administrative units and satellite campuses of the university. To reflect Kashmir’s natural heritage, the nine participating teams have been named after the Valley’s iconic rivers. The competition is being held on a league-cum-knockout basis.
In the opening match, Team Sindh defeated Team Lidder, while Team Jhelum registered a five-run victory over Team Chenab in the second match.
Amjad Qadir, cricket coach, starred for Team Jhelum with an all-round performance, scoring 42 runs and taking three wickets.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Nilofer Khan appreciated the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports for organising the tournament and said such initiatives provide employees with an opportunity to rejuvenate, relieve workplace stress and strengthen teamwork beyond their professional responsibilities.
Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal emphasised the importance of institutional sporting activities and called for making the Employees’ Tournament a regular feature of the university’s annual sports calendar, saying such events contribute to employees’ health, morale and inter-departmental camaraderie.
