Srinagar: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday joined the Muharram procession of Shia mourners on Ashura, which was taken out through a designated route in the interior areas of downtown Srinagar, officials said.

The LG joined the procession in the Zadibal area here, and distributed refreshments among the mourners on the occasion of Ashura -the tenth day of the Islamic month of Muharram.

Sinha paid his respects by offering a ‘chadar’ to the symbolic ‘Zuljanah’, the officials said.

He interacted with the mourners and assessed the arrangements for the procession, they said.

The officials said Director General of Police, Nalin Prabhat, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg, and other senior officers of police and civil administration were present on the occasion.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also joined the Ashura gathering at Zadibal in downtown Srinagar.

Abdullah distributed refreshments at a stall set up by his party, the National Conference (NC).

The chief minister was accompanied by his Advisor, Nasir Aslam Wani, and MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq.

Wearing a black Kurta-Shalwar, and donning a ‘kifayah’ (scarf), Abdullah also interacted with mourners and volunteers.

Hundreds of mourners gathered to observe Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions in the battle of Karbala.
