Baramulla: The Inter-Zonal District Level Kabaddi Championship for Under-17 Boys, organised by the Department of Youth Services & Sports (DYSS), Baramulla, began with enthusiasm and competitive spirit at Boys Higher Secondary School (BHSS) Baramulla on Thursday.
The championship was inaugurated by Mubeen Ahmad Khan, Physical Education Master (PEM) and Activity Incharge DYSSO Baramulla, in the presence of Mohammad Arif Bhat, Physical Education Lecturer (PEL) and Convenor-cum-Chief Selector of the tournament, along with senior officials and technical experts of the department.
A total of 13 zonal teams from across Baramulla district are participating in the championship, which is being conducted in a league format. Each team will play four matches, providing players an opportunity to showcase their skills, fitness and competitive abilities.
Addressing the participants, Mubeen Ahmad Khan highlighted the importance of sports in developing discipline, teamwork and confidence among students.
He urged players to maintain sportsmanship and commitment throughout the tournament, while appreciating the efforts of the Department of Youth Services & Sports in promoting sports culture and providing platforms for young talent.
Mohammad Arif Bhat encouraged participants to utilise the opportunity and perform to the best of their abilities. He said such competitions help identify talented players for higher-level events and contribute towards the physical, mental and social development of students.
The opening day witnessed exciting contests and impressive performances by participating teams. At the end of the league-stage matches, eight teams qualified for the quarterfinal stage.
The quarterfinals, semifinals and final of the championship will be held on June 27, 2026, at the same venue, where the district champion will be decided after a series of competitive encounters.
