SRINAGAR: Director Agriculture Kashmir Sartaj Ahmad Shah on Tuesday led an awareness campaign under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan at the Directorate Park, Lal Mandi, highlighting the need to protect agricultural land and promote sustainable farming practices.
The programme, organised by Chief Agriculture Officer Srinagar Ajaz Hussain Dar, witnessed participation from Agriculture Department officers and officials, progressive farmers and students, who were sensitised about the objectives of the campaign and the importance of preserving agricultural land for future generations.
As part of the event, a plantation drive was also conducted during which Shah, along with departmental officers, farmers and students, planted saplings in the Directorate premises to promote environmental conservation and ecological sustainability.
Addressing the gathering, the Director Agriculture stressed the need for effective implementation of the objectives of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan. He called for the judicious and balanced use of fertilisers to maintain soil health and ensure sustainable agricultural productivity.
Shah advocated greater adoption of liquid fertilisers, organic manures and natural farming practices to improve soil fertility, reduce dependence on chemical inputs and promote climate-resilient agriculture.
He also emphasised the need to create wider awareness among farmers about flagship government schemes, including the PM-KISAN and the Kisan Credit Card programme, so that eligible beneficiaries can avail themselves of the available support. He urged field functionaries to intensify outreach activities and strengthen engagement with farmers at the grassroots level.
The programme concluded with participants taking a pledge to protect agricultural land, conserve natural resources, promote sustainable farming practices and contribute towards the overall development of the agriculture sector in Kashmir.
