Litchi growers interact with eminent scientists

JAMMU, JULY 31: As part of efforts to promote the cultivation of litchi and provide on spot solution to the problems faced by the farmers here, one day training cum interactive session was organized by the department of Horticulture Jammu here at village Band Ghai Block Marh.

A large number of litchi growers of Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur and Reasi districts participated in the programme. An eminent scientist from National research centre Muzzafarpur, Dr Vishal Nath explained various aspects of litchi cultivation with respect to its economics and diversification of traditional crops. He urged the orchardists to adopt modern techniques in its cultivation. He also stressed on adoption of cluster farming keeping in view the decreasing land holding of the farmers and formation of litchi export zones.

Dr. Amrinder Kumar, another senior scientist from the NRCL explained the orchardists regarding nutrient management, fertilizer application plant protection operations and soil sampling and canopy management to harvest good quality produce.

Later, on spot canopy management and girdling was demonstrated in the orchard of farmer Mulkh Raj by the team of expert from NRCL.

The farmer appreciated the efforts of the department in organizing such awareness programme. The programme was held under the supervision of Chief Horticulture officer Jammu S. Kirtan Singh Raina.

Subject matter Specialists and Horticulture Development officers also attended the programme.
