6 Kashmiris arrested in Rajasthan, released later: Govt

Jammu, Feb 05 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir government today said six Kashmiri persons were arrested by the Rajasthan police for allegedly entering a prohibited area along the IB near Jailsalmer and were later released.

Responding to a point raised by MLA Usman Majeed in the Legislative Assembly in this regard, Minister for Revenue Abdul Rehman Veeri said that the six persons — Ehsaan Ahmad Mir, Athar Majeed Shah, Zaffar Qureshi, Sayeem Wani, Ghulam Mohammed (driver) and Shameem Awan, were residents of Bandipora.

He said according to the information provided by the Rajasthan Police, these persons were stopped by the BSF as they had entered a prohibited area and were handed over to the police.

“During interrogation, they told the police that they started their journey from Amritsar and were using GPS for shortest possible route to Jaisalmer. They reached near Indira Gandhi Nahar Project (IGNP) canal (a prohibited area) by mistake. JIC of Jaisalmer questioned them,” Veeri quoted the Rajasthan Police as saying.

He said all the persons were released on Sunday evening according to the Rajasthan Police, and further details were awaited.
