Srinagar: Police on Saturday said it has arrested six alleged drug peddlers in separate operations in Anantnag, Shopian, and Kulgam districts.

In Anantnag, police arrested Syed Sahil alias “Doggy”, a resident of Firdous Colony Bemina, Srinagar, at present Rayar Budgam; Farhan Majeed Wani of Gaberpora Hall, Shopian; and Uzair Ahmad Itoo of Sehpora, Dooru, at Halmulla, Sangam after approximately 12.7 grams of heroin-like substance was recovered from their possession. The car (JK01AG-4342) they were travelling in from Jammu towards Srinagar was also seized, a police spokesperson informed.

One Sartaj Ahmad Allie of Naina Batpora, was arrested near Naina Bridge, after approximately 19 grams of brown sugar was recovered from him.

In Shopian, police arrested Mohammad Ashraf Bhat of Barbugh Imamsahib during routine checking at Chanchward Crossing. Approximately 300 grams of poppy straw-like substance was recovered from him.

Police also claimed to have busted a covert drug supply network operating through indirect channels and arrested two accused involved in narcotics trafficking.

Sharing details, police said it had arrested one Sajad Ahmad Dar of Nishat, Srinagar, few days back after five grams of heroin-like substance was recovered from his possession.

During the course of investigation, the backward linkage of the arrested accused led police to Firdous Ahmad Bhat of Pehlipora, Waripora Safapora, Ganderbal, who was subsequently arrested and approximately 20 grams of brown sugar was recovered from him.

Investigation revealed that the accused had been operating discreetly for nearly the last one year while maintaining a clean profile to avoid suspicion. The accused adopted a highly secretive modus operandi by avoiding direct contact with drug peddlers and consumers and instead operating through agents/intermediaries for supply of narcotic substances, police said.

Most transactions were carried out during night hours using indirect methods of communication and delivery to evade police detection. Further investigation in the case is underway and more arrests and recoveries are expected, police said.
