Srinagar, May 16: Senior Superintendent of Police G. V. Sandeep on Saturday inaugurated the District Administration Srinagar’s Rolling Trophy Inter-College Cricket Tournament-2026 at Sri Pratap College under the Youth Engagement and Empowerment Programme.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Seem Naz, IAS probationer Alfred Thomas and principals of various colleges from Srinagar.
Officials from the Youth Services and Sports Department, Srinagar administration and police officers were also present.
The opening match of the tournament was played between Amar Singh College and Government Degree College Hyderpora, with Amar Singh College winning the toss and opting to field first.
A total of 18 teams, including nine men’s and nine women’s teams from different government degree colleges, are participating in the tournament.
Speaking on the occasion, SSP Srinagar highlighted the role of sports in youth development and character building, saying such activities help channelise the energy of young people towards constructive pursuits.
He urged students to stay away from drugs and focus on sports, education and community service, describing substance abuse as a serious threat to society and youth.
Nodal Principal Seem Naz also stressed the importance of sports in promoting discipline, leadership and teamwork among students.
She said educational institutions and society must work collectively to protect youth from substance abuse and other social evils, adding that sports can play a key role in encouraging healthy and positive lifestyles.
The tournament aims to promote sports culture, youth engagement and empowerment among college students across Srinagar.
