KULGAM: In a significant step towards strengthening sanitation infrastructure and sustainable waste management, the Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) at Liroo in Kulgam district was made operational on Sunday after the successful completion of its first trial run, making Kulgam the first district in the Union Territory to have such a facility in the rural sector.
Officials said the initiative marks a major milestone in improving sanitation services, public health standards and environmental protection in rural areas.
Assistant Commissioner Development (ACD) Kulgam Bilal Ahmad Kamgar said the plant has been established to scientifically manage and treat faecal sludge collected from septic tanks and soak pits, ensuring safe disposal and reducing environmental pollution.
The trial was conducted under the directions of Deputy Commissioner Kulgam Shahzad Aalam by ACD Kulgam Bilal Ahmad Kamgar in the presence of Tehsildar and Executive Officer Kulgam Nisar Ahmad and other technical experts, who inspected the functioning and operational mechanisms of the facility.
Officials stated that the FSTP will cater to both urban and rural areas of the district by providing an efficient and eco-friendly solution for faecal waste management.
They added that the project is expected to significantly improve sanitation practices and cleanliness across the district.
