Ahsan Mukhtar, Shaheena Shahbaz win GCOE Annual Road Races in Srinagar

Srinagar: Government College of Education (IASE), M.A. Road Srinagar on Saturday organised its Annual College Road Race 2026 for male and female students, with more than 90 students participating in the event.

The women’s 5-kilometre race was flagged off at 6:30 am by College Principal Seema Naz from SKICC, while the men’s 6-kilometre race began at 6:15 am from Gupkar Link Road.

Both races concluded at Foreshore Road near Nishat Garden after passing through Gupkar Road and the stretch near the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden.

In the women’s category, Shaheena Shahbaz of B.Ed 1st Semester secured the first position by completing the race in 35.5 minutes. Sabha Assad, also from B.Ed 1st Semester, finished second with a timing of 40.15 minutes, while Uzma Shafi from the ECCE Department secured third place in 45 minutes.

Tabinda, Haleema Bano, Kusum, Rutba, Shaheen Kounsar, Sonika and Minakashi secured fourth to tenth positions respectively.

In the men’s category, Ahsan Mukhtar Dar of UG 6th Semester emerged victorious with a timing of 25.5 minutes. Showkat of UG 4th Semester secured second place in 27.4 minutes, while Hyder, also from UG 4th Semester, finished third in 28.5 minutes.

Zakir Hussain, Abdul Rehman, Zakir Hussain Lone, M. Junaid, Imtiyaz Ahmad, Muhammad Iqbal and Muhammad Ashraf Bimla secured fourth to tenth positions respectively.

A prize distribution ceremony was later held at Nishat, where trophies were awarded to the top three finishers and medals were presented to the first ten position holders by the Principal and senior faculty members.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Seema Naz highlighted the importance of sports and physical fitness in shaping students’ overall personality. She encouraged students to actively participate in sports activities and said such events help promote discipline, teamwork and a healthy competitive spirit.

She also underlined the significance of women’s participation in sports, stating that sports empower women, build confidence and encourage leadership qualities among young girls.

The Principal further said that active involvement in sports and extracurricular activities plays a crucial role in keeping students away from drug abuse and contributes towards building a healthy and drug-free society.

Convenor College Sports Board, Mohd Yasin Pir, also addressed the participants and stressed the importance of sports in student life while encouraging wider participation in future sporting events.

Among others, Dr. Bilquees Aslam, Dr. Daljeet Kour and other faculty members were present on the occasion.

The event was organised by the Department of Physical Education under the supervision of Dr. Mohd Yasin Pir, with support from Dr. Qazi Inaam and Dr. Daljeet Kour.

At the conclusion of the event, Prof. Seema Naz expressed gratitude to the Health Department and Traffic Police for their cooperation in ensuring smooth conduct of the races.
