Srinagar: The University of Kashmir on Saturday concluded the All India Inter-University Wushu Championship (Men & Women) at SKISC Srinagar, marking the end of a six-day sporting event that witnessed participation from universities across the country.
The championship was organised by the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports (DPE&S), University of Kashmir, under the aegis of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.
According to organisers, the championship saw participation from 195 universities and over 1,500 athletes, making it one of the largest inter-university Wushu championships held in the country.
The event provided a competitive platform for emerging Wushu athletes to showcase their skills and also served as a preparatory stage for athletes expected to represent India at the upcoming World University Games scheduled to be held in Brazil in June.
The concluding ceremony and prize distribution function were held at Sher-i-Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex and were attended by senior university officials and sports dignitaries.
Registrar University of Kashmir, Naseer Iqbal, attended the event as chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Naseer Iqbal said the successful hosting of an event of such scale reflected the growing sporting profile of the University of Kashmir and Jammu and Kashmir as a whole.
He said the participation of youth from different parts of the country demonstrated the unifying spirit of sports and appreciated the efforts of the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports for organising the championship successfully.
Among others present on the occasion were Provost Boys KU Prof. Showkat Ahmad Shah, Dean Students Welfare KU Prof. Pervez Ahmad, Director South Campus KU Prof. Waseem Bari, AIU Observer Dr. Brij Kishore, Deputy Registrar KU Sheikh Asif, coaches, officers and officials of the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports.
Organising Secretary and Coordinator DPE&S KU, Surjeet Singh, presented a detailed report on the conduct and achievements of the championship and thanked the university administration, participating institutions, Jammu and Kashmir Police, athletes and stakeholders for their support.
Lovely Professional University emerged as the overall champions of the championship, while University of Manipur secured the runners-up trophy.
The winning teams were felicitated with trophies and mementoes during the closing ceremony.
The proceedings of the event were conducted by Assistant Director DPE&S Dr. Nadeem Ahmad Dar, while the formal vote of thanks was delivered by Assistant Director DPE&S Dr. Basharat Ali.
