Jammu: Traffic movement remained slow on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway on Saturday, while several other routes across Jammu and Kashmir were either closed or operating partially due to adverse conditions and ongoing road works, officials said.
According to Traffic Police Headquarters, slow movement was reported on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) due to single-lane traffic between Marog and Kishtwar Pather, along with the breakdown of a heavy motor vehicle near Kishtwar Pather. Movement of nomadic herds between Nagrota and Banihal also contributed to congestion.
Officials told Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that traffic on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway is likely to remain slow on Sunday as well, advising commuters to maintain lane discipline and avoid overtaking.
No fresh vehicular movement was allowed on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway on Saturday; however, stranded vehicles were cleared towards Ramban and Banihal. Traffic on the Srinagar–Jammu stretch was permitted from Qazigund towards Banihal, Ramban, and Udhampur, while regulated movement was also allowed from Jammu towards Srinagar.
The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway had remained closed for most of Friday due to shooting stones and landslides, while ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal further affected movement.
Subject to favourable weather and road conditions, passenger vehicles and light motor vehicles (LMVs) are expected to ply from both sides of the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway on Sunday. Heavy motor vehicles (HMVs) will be allowed only after an assessment of road conditions. Commuters have been advised to travel during the daytime and avoid overloading.
Meanwhile, traffic on the Kishtwar–Sinthan–Anantnag road remains suspended due to snow accumulation and road damage.
On the Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri (SSG) Road, LMVs followed by HMVs will be allowed from Srinagar towards Kargil, subject to assessment of road conditions.
Traffic on the Mughal Road will operate on a regulated basis, with LMVs permitted from Shopian towards Poonch between 5:00 AM and 10:00 AM, subject to weather conditions.
Authorities have urged commuters to check the latest road status and follow official advisories before undertaking travel to avoid inconvenience.
