Ramban: A 22-year-old youth from Ramban, who had been missing for nearly 20 days, was found dead on Saturday, officials said.
According to officials, the body was recovered from Nallah Bishlari near Kraalna Digdool in Ramban district. The youth had gone missing on April 12 near Makarkoot along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway while travelling from Jammu to his native village.
Officials said he had allegedly been intercepted and assaulted by a group of individuals before jumping into a nearby stream, after which he remained untraced.
“Today, the body was spotted in the stream near Digdool and retrieved by rescue teams,” an official said, adding that the body, in a decomposed condition, has been shifted to a hospital for medico-legal formalities.
The deceased has been identified as Tanveer Ahmad Chopan (22), son of Abdul Salam Chopan, a resident of Mundkhal Pogal.
Police have registered a case under FIR No. 26/2026 at Ramsoo Police Station and arrested four persons in connection with the incident. The accused have been identified as Surjeet Singh, Sandeep Singh, Digvijay Singh, and Keval Singh.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ramban, Arun Gupta, has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Surinder Singh Biloria to probe the case.
The family of the deceased has alleged that the chase and assault led to his death and has demanded a fair and thorough investigation along with strict action against those involved.
