Srinagar: The Congress on Saturday termed the “prolonged delay” in restoring statehood for Jammu and Kashmir as unacceptable and said the party would continue its fight to safeguard people’s rights.

The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) held a review meeting at its office here, attended by coordinators and district presidents from across Kashmir. The meeting was chaired by JKPCC president Tariq Hameed Karra, a party press release said.

It said Karra reviewed feedback on ongoing party activities in various districts. The party’s indigenous programme – ‘Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq’, launched to press for restoration of statehood — also figured in the discussions.

Karra asked party leaders to actively involve people in the programme to send a clear message to the Centre that the “prolonged delay” in statehood restoration was unacceptable and the Congress shall continue to fight for it and for safeguarding people’s rights.

“We need to further gear up our political activities at the grassroots in all the districts and ensure involvement of people in the party’s indigenous movement, Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq,” Karra said.

Karra said people have great expectations from Congress.

“They know it is the Congress party alone which is capable of fighting for safeguarding their rights and ensuring redressal of their genuine grievances. The Congress represents people’s aspirations and feels committed to serving them,” he added.

“We are ready to deal with the challenges of whatever nature,” Karra said, adding the party is “strong enough to overcome these politically”.
